The Common App essay, at 650 words

Maximum 650 words. Minimum 250. The text box enforces the cap, so a 900-word draft cannot be squeezed in with smaller margins or tighter spacing — it has to be genuinely cut.

The practical target is 550 to 650 words. Coming in at 400 is technically valid but almost always signals the same problem: the essay describes what happened and stops before saying what the writer made of it. The reflection is the part admissions officers are reading for.

The seven prompts

The prompts change little from year to year and are deliberately wide. Number seven lets you write on any topic at all, which means no idea is disqualified by the prompt list — pick the story first, then find the prompt it fits.

• Background or identity so central that the application would be incomplete without it.
• A setback or failure — what happened, and what you took from it.
• A belief you questioned or challenged, and what followed.
• Something someone did for you that left you grateful in a way that changed you.
• An accomplishment or realization that marked a period of growth.
• A topic that absorbs you so completely you lose track of time.
• Topic of your choice.

What actually separates good from forgettable

• One story, told closely. A single well-observed scene beats a tour of four achievements. Depth reads as maturity; breadth reads as a list.
• The reader already has your résumé. Grades, scores and activities arrive separately. Repeating them wastes the only section written in your own voice.
• Small subjects work. Essays about a grandmother's kitchen, a broken bicycle or a stubborn maths problem routinely outperform essays about mission trips and championships — because they are specific and unrepeatable.
• Half the words go to reflection. Roughly: what happened, then what you now understand that you did not before.
• Read it aloud. If it does not sound like you speaking, it will not sound like you on the page either.

One essay, every college

A main essay that names one particular university is a common and avoidable mistake: every other college receives it too.
